“Ember Days” are three days of prayer and fasting observed four times a year— on a Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday in each of the four seasons. They are celebrated near the beginning of each season following Ash Wednesday, Pentecost, Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, and the Feast of St. Lucy.
The roots of Ember Days go back to the Old Testament. In the 1969 revision of the liturgical calendar, the Ember Days are no longer formally observed. These days are opportunities to give thanks for God’s blessings. Fasting on the Ember Days reminds us to honor nature’s gifts by using them in moderation. The Church has always tied together giving thanks and giving alms, and the Ember Days are no exception. We also pray for priests on Ember Days.
